Things you should know about living in the bush

  • Cellphone reception is always tricky in the bush, and you might be unable to contact your loved ones at home.  Please let them know about this.  Your PH will know where the best reception points are and will take you to a place with good cellphone reception if necessary.  Alternatively, your host or PH will help you to get a message to your loved ones.
  • Wifi is available at some lodges, but signals are often weak.
  • Some “things” will bite you – spiders, ticks, blister beetles, scorpions, etc.  Most insect species are not poisonous, but you might have some discomfort or show an allergic reaction.  If you are bitten, please let your host know as soon as possible.
  • There is no such thing as a tame wild animal.  Everything in the bush should always be considered wild and dangerous (to some extent).  Please don’t feed the animals or try to make friends with them.   You cannot take a selfie with a wild animal.
  • Listen to your host and PH.  These people know the bush and its dangers.  If you are unsure about something, please ask them.
  • Show some respect.  When you are in the bush, you are at the mercy of the bush, not the other way around.  Always show the utmost respect to all living things.
  • All the lodges and hunting concessions are far from civilization.   So please make sure that you bring everything you need for your safari.
  • Stay hydrated.   The bush can be a very harsh environment, and drinking enough water is critical.  Don’t drink water from rivers or the taps unless your host or PH tells you it is okay.  Most lodges will provide sufficient bottled water, and there will also be a lot of water on any trip.
  • Don’t underestimate the sun.  Even though your hunt will take place during winter, the sun can be deadly in the bush.  Make sure you wear a hat at all times and use good sunscreen.  You don’t want sunburn or sunstroke to spoil your hunt.
